Christmas Wish, Fear Not!

Fear NotAll of us, in one way or another, live our lives running as fugitives from some kind of fear.  A social psychologist conducted a study with a test group of 500 persons and found they listed 7,000 different fears.  They spoke of fearing the future; getting sick, losing a loved one, not having a job, experiencing failure, being lonely, growing old, and 6993 other fears.

As we sit on the stoop of 2013, we live with the escalating fear of being a victim of violence.  In fact, I am writing this article on the first morning which families are taking their children back to school after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Connecticut.  My heart goes out to these families whose worst fears were reinforced by this terrible tragedy.  None of us know what our future holds, but this we can affirm: However frightening our fears, we need not be overcome by that which might be.

Let us hear the words of the angels more clearly as Christmas approaches: “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”.  Luke 2: 10, 11FUMC Angels 2012
